The developers seem to appreciate that hardcore players aren't too interested in any heavy-set mechanical or gameplay features and additions.
They only seek the intensity, destruction, and bizarre narratives that come with each game. Twisted Metal 4 does only that - it's vehicle combat for fans - not really anyone else. It's a fun as a party game - but simply shelved after a couple of hours. The game only narrowly beats out the entertainment value of competitors such as the Vigilante series.
Honestly, I'd give it a miss if you're looking for a vehicle game that will deliver the ultimate thrill. The good news: went back to the drawing boards and has given us a better game than the previous offering that was Twisted Metal III. The game engine plays and feels very much like the first two offerings from Singletrac. Gone are the constant and annoying flip-overs from III although the programmers over compensated for this a bit by having the cars flip back a little too quickly.
The arena designs are better this time around as well. They have a lot of variety, are interesting for the most part and are full of secrets. Finally, the new remote weapons are a nice addition to the arsenal. Everything seems to indicate that this is the best Twisted Metal yet, but unfortunately, that is not the case.
So what's the bad news? The game speed varies from extremely fast almost too fast in the one-player game and smooth to choppy and slow. Once in a while, you can get your car stuck against a wall, and it won't become unstuck until you get smacked by an opponent.
Also, some of the levels are way too big, leading to prolonged periods of inactivity while you're trying to locate some machine gun fodder.
The genre's getting old on the PS TM 4 is better than last year's game. They fixed the roll-over problem as well as other control issues. The environments are bigger and more interactive as well. You can blow up objects to reveal secret passages and special weapons great fun.
Even so, it's no Rogue Trip. Things that hurt it: Create-a-car is too limited, it takes too much to kill enemies, and vehicles occasionally get hung up in walls glitch. On top of that, multiplayer is a bit boring at times.
I don't understand why this game is updated and rehashed every year like it's a sports game. The first two were fine! I never got into Twisted Metal before, and number four didn't do anything to convince me that I'm missing out. You pick your vehicle from an array of heavily-modified cars, including a flamethrowing Chevette, a spinning F1, to a dangerous contraption that consists of nothing more than two monster wheels with you strapped in the middle. You then play through a series of arena throughout the world, picking up weapons and trying to kill other vehicles before you are toast. Each car has its own special move, and the game obeys a logical yet totally unrealistic physics model that allows you to turn on a dime and go flying feet in the air.
The weapons in comparison are quite standard: dumbfire and homing missiles, ricochet bombs, mines, napalm, and many more. The environments are also very well-designed. The Paris level, for example, features a destructible Eiffel Tower in addition to several priceless works of art in the Louvre; the Antarctica level collapses piece by piece until one small glacier island is left; the incredibly large Hong Kong level contains a subway complete with trains coming and going on schedule and one of the biggest and most difficult bosses you will ever see.
There are also a few multiplayer modes to choose from, including a two-player co-operative mode that allows you and a friend to go against computer-controlled teams. With excellent levels, furious action, and unrealistic but fun physics, Twisted Metal 2 is definitely worth a look for anyone who enjoys games like Quarantine , Death Drome , or Rocket Jockey.
Two thumbs up, way up! There is a false trojan when virus scanned. It has the original version as well as a Russian hack that rebalances the game. Single player is the original game with no changes which most of us play online and multiplayer launches with the Russian hacks. Deagon 0 point. Anyone has any idea of how to fix the aspect ratio in this, TM1 and Jet Moto? Even though these repacks are awesome, the games still look awfully stretched on a screen. I'm trying to hex edit the executable by comparing it to the PS1 version which has a known widescreen patch but I couldn't find any useful addresses yet. NIFT 0 point.
